MAKE A COMMITMENT

Name:

Date:

Family and friends can interfere with your job of seeking employment, or they can be asked to be part of a support system during the process. Find a friend or family member you can enlist to be part of a buddy system with you. It can be helpful to have someone you trust to provide suggestions for building your network, to read your resume, to listen as you practice for an interview, to offer suggestions for improvement, and to help you stay on schedule as you work through the job-search unit and process.

These activities will help you realize the importance of making a commitment to your future.

Step 1:

Identify three individuals who could be enlisted to be part of your buddy system. Describe why each of these individuals is a good candidate to be your "buddy."

Step 2:

As you work through the rest of this unit, prepare a list of the responsibilities you would ask a friend or family member to fulfill as a member of your buddy system during a job-search process.

Step 3:

As an indication of your commitment to search for employment, negotiate a contract with your buddy where you make a promise to make every effort as you work through the job-search process. A contract includes your name, the name of the person you are making the contract with, the amount of time and days you plan to devote to the process, and your job goal. Here is an example of a contract.

I, Sarah Johnson, promise my buddy, Frank Johnson, and myself that I will work on my job-search process three hours each day for three days each week. I promise to follow through on each activity until I have completed all the tasks related to finding a job where I use my interest in working outdoors and my skills in working with plants, keeping records, and assisting people to work in a nursery or greenhouse.

In the space below, write a contract that indicates your commitment to complete the job-search process in this unit. Make a copy of the contract and tape it in a location where it is visible to you every day.
