SET A JOB GOAL

Name:

Date:

An effective job-search strategy starts with a job goal. Many job seekers go into job-hunting without setting a meaningful goal. They look for jobs that pay a sufficient wage and spend their lives wandering from job to job trying to just earn a living. Personal satisfaction comes when you find a position that matches your skills and interests. In addition, developing a job goal helps you focus and organize your job search.

A job goal indicates what you want to do and where you want to do it. What you want to do is related to your skills or expertise and may be narrowed to an area of interest or field, occupation, job title, or specific position. Where you want to work describes the environment in which you want to use your skills or expertise. Below are some examples:

  • I want to use my problem solving, communication, and technical skills in computer programming for a small company in the Midwest.
  • I want to use my organizational, management, and word-processing skills; my interest in working with people; and my experience in the insurance industry to be an administrative assistant in a large insurance company.
  • I want to use my interest in working outdoors and my skills in working with plants, keeping records, and assisting people to work in a nursery or greenhouse.

Answer the following questions and use the information to write your job goal. The job goal you develop will be used as a focus for the job-search strategy and activities for the remainder of this unit. Remember, you can change or update your job goal at any time during the job-search process and during this unit.

Step 1: Criteria

Answer the following questions and then go to Step 2.

1.What skills and/or expertise do you want to use? What industry or job clusters are you interested in working in?

2.What setting do you want to work in? Indoors or outdoors? Casual or formal attire? Daytime, nighttime or weekend hours?

3.Who do you want to be working with? Alone, or as part of a team? Children, adolescents, or adults? Supervising or being supervised?

4.What type of organization do you want to work for? Large or small? One you own?

5.Where do you want to live and work? Rural or urban community? Large or small community? Long or short commute? What part of the world?

Step 2: Your Job Goal

Now, write your own job goal. Use the questions in Step 1 and your thoughts about them as a guide.
