Practice Writing Goals
Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you
feel that you, too, are great.
--Mark Twain
Writing goals takes some practice. In this activity you have the opportunity
to practice in a non-graded project. Use the RIMS systems and apply it to a goal that you are already targeting, or use this
activity to plan out a dream goal.
Here is an example:
Darlene has always wanted to have a farm with exotic animals. How
would Darlene do this activity? Using the RIMS System, her goal might look like this:
Goal--I want to own a horse farm by the time I am 30 years old.
R - Realistic-- Darlene is 20 years old. She has the time to learn the horse farm business and
go to school to learn to take care of horses. Plus, she is not geographically bound. That is, she is able to move to a rural
area where she can have horses.
I - Important-- This is a criterion that only Darlene can answer. She has "always" wanted a horse
farm. This is important to her.
M - Measurable --Darlene will know whether or not she makes her goal, and when she makes her
goal. She will either have the horse farm by the time she is 30, or she won't.
S - Specific-- Darlene worded her goal very specifically. She states what she wants in some detail
-- a (one) horse farm (not cow farm or pig farm) -- and when she wants it -- by the time she is 30 years old.
Now it's your turn. Think of a goal you would like to work on. It
can be a personal goal (e.g., I want to lose 10 pounds) or a career goal (e.g., I would like to get a part-time job). This
is a required activity and is graded as complete/not complete. Copy and paste this assignment onto a Word document before you complete it.
List your goal here:
After each letter below, enter your reasons why this goal is achievable.
Use Darlene's example if you get stuck.
R – Realistic-
I - Important to you-
M - Measurable –
S - Specific –
