Now it's your turn. In the space below, practice writing a letter to the contact you've chosen. Do not copy the sample letter word for word. You may want to add information such as:

  • The reasons why you chose this person to contact (e.g., Is it a family friend? Did someone recommend this person? Is this person a leader in his/her field?)
  • Why you're interested in the career in the first place (e.g., Have you taken several courses in this area? Do you know someone else who has the same occupation?)
  • If you've had any experience (e.g., part-time jobs, volunteering, internships) in this area?

Don't make the letter much longer than the sample letter, but make it three paragraphs. Busy professionals appreciate communication that is brief and to the point. You will need to use a word processing program such as Microsoft Word to format and print your letter.
