In this activity, you will learn how your values, interests, and skills actually apply to the world of work. You will take your five values, your five skills, and your five interests through a process to determine which career would be most satisfying. Hopefully, at the end of this activity, you'll really see how knowing yourself is the essential element in creating your self-portrait.

This activity requires a significant amount of guesswork. You will be asked to imagine what it would be like in the three careers of your choice. There are no right or wrong answers. Allow yourself at least 20 minutes to complete this activity.

This is a required activity and is graded as complete/not complete.

Keep in mind that this activity calls for a lot of guesswork. You will have to imagine what it would be like to be in the careers you've listed. You have no way of knowing (unless you've actually had the career) how some of your criteria will be satisfied in a particular career. For that matter, in the real world of work, you don't know either. But you can make yourself as informed as possible. Make as accurate a judgment as you can. No number is right or wrong, bad or good. GUESS and have fun!

  • STEP 1: Look at the graphic below. You'll see a Criteria column, an Importance column, and three Career columns. In the Criteria column, there are four sections--Values, Interests, Skills, and Other.
  • STEP 2: In the Career columns, enter three careers you're interested in. You may use careers you currently have or have had in the past or go back to the OCCUPATIONS ASSESSMENT on page 8 of your ASSESSMENT BOOKLET and choose the two that most interest you. In the Fantasy column, choose a job that you dream about but don't necessarily think you'll ever have.
  • STEP 3: In five text fields in the Values segment, enter your five most important values from the activity in Lesson 2. In the Interests section, enter the five interests you determined from your Assessment Booklet. In the Skills section, enter the five skills that you determined from your Assessments Booklet.
  • STEP 4: In the Importance column, choose one value, interest, and skill that you feel is the most important of the group and give it a "10." Only ONE criteria per group may receive a "10." Rank the remaining four values, interests, and skills with any number between "0" (least important) and "9" (most important). Keep in mind, you're comparing the remaining values, interests, and skills to the one you ranked a "10." Vary the numbers as much as possible (i.e., don't put 10, 9, 9, 9, 9). The more you vary the numbers, the better the results will be.
  • STEP 5: Compare each career against each value, interest, and skill by asking, "Which career would best satisfy this value/interest/skill?" Enter an "X" in that career that best answers that question. You must enter only ONE "X" for each value, interest, and skill.
  • STEP 6: After entering an "X" in the Career columns, look to see how many "X's" you have in each column. The career with the most "X's" would best satisfy all those criteria that you listed. If you have a tie (i.e., one or more careers have the same number of of "X's"), look at the criteria you ranked a "10." The career with the most "X's" in the row you ranked a "10" will satisfy that particular criterion more than the other careers.
