Remember the term technique was presented
in the Introduction to this Lesson. Technique was defined as skill. An important thing to keep in mind about techniques or
skills is that everyone is different. Not everyone has the same skills. You may be better at singing than your best friend,
but your best friend may be better at throwing a curve ball. The fact that you both have different skills doesn't mean that
you are better than your friend or that your friend is better than you. You simply have different skills.
We tend to be successful at things
we enjoy doing or things that interest us. We spend more time and energy improving our technique if we're having fun. Interests
and skills are very closely linked.
Keep in mind that just because you
are strong in a particular technique doesn't mean that you can't improve. When it comes to the world of work, you will be
competing with many people for the same job. You want to make sure you have the best skills for that job. For the following activity, you will need to have completed Competencies assessment on pages 6 and 7 in
the Assessment Booklet.
|
Go to the ASSESSMENT BOOKLET and complete the COMPETENCIES assessment on pages 6
and 7 NOW. |
Once you have finished the Competencies
assessment, keep your booklet open to pages 6 and 7 and complete activity. The results of this activity will be used again
at the end of this unit.
Look only at
the Like column for each of the six sections and at the Total boxes in each section. Which of the six sections have the highest
totals? The totals in each section represent those groups where your skills seem to lie. The higher the total, the greater
your skills in that area.
Now go through all of the skills you indicated in the Like column and select the five skills
that you enjoy using the most. If you're having a hard time coming up with only five, think of the things you really enjoy
doing and can do fairly well. If it's something you're good at, but don't like to do, don't select that one.
After
you've selected five, enter them in the blanks provided. You will revisit your five skills in the final activity of this unit.
